Mascot Implementation Complete!

A job well done.. is what I would like to say. It has been alot of work. Since I have had tons to do in the past little while. But I'm glad I'm done. It does look better than before too!

As you can see, the banner is updated to include the mascot.

Also ads can be seen on the side and the search bar is also an ad by google. Personally, I would probably never click the banner ads, but the search bar might be of some use to people.

It only searches
nekomagic, hobbysearch, benippon, and this site, springscalling.

Although I don't expect it, money can supposedly be generated from these. Well, I'll post something about it, if it ever gets close to the payout amount ($10).

Until then, pretend theres no banner and no money making and just use it as normal.

Mascot Implementation Nearly Complete

Hello, everyone. Remember the mascot thing I asked my friend to do for me? I finally finished adding it to something I always thought about making after seeing nekomagic's website.

So this is the new idea for the future posts.
There will be three backgrounds for the banners at the beginning of each post.
Brown will represent the past.
Green will represent the present.
Finally, blue will represent the future.

Think of it as a tree or flower. It first has to make its way out of the Earth, to see the surface. Then it grows taller as if reaching for the sky.

So if the post will be mentioning something that has happened, the banner background would be brown, etc.

Also, I will also include the mascot face in each banner, signifying whether that event was happy, sad, angry, etc.

Here are some example banners.
This banner would indicate the blog post is of the past and it was a sad event. (such as wanting to buy some figurine which had sold out)

This banner would indicate the post is current and causes me to be angry. (such as attending an anime convention which had a delayed opening)

So this is the scheme I hope I can start using (as long as bandwidth permits and I remember to add these banners).

Also, I am also thinking of how to implement the mascot to the banner at the very top. I was only provided with 1 image, perhaps I'll have to edit it or something. Or post it as is. I need to think...

Happy Chinese New Year and Valentines Day

I know I'm a day old. Haha...

As some may already know, both Chinese New Year and Valentines Day occurred on the same date, Feb 14, 2010.

So I celebrated with my parents. We went around Ottawa/Quebec to do/see different things.
- We went snowboarding (for my first time).
- Saw the Winterlude ice sculptures.
- Ate the famous "Beavertail" (I had avalanche).
- Slid around the Ottawa Canal (without skates).

All in all, a great time. One regret would be the falling part during snowboarding.

Photos are in the link here.

Hinanai Tenshi Figures

Oh my gawd ! D:
I was doing a search for Touhou figurines of Hinanai Tenshi, I found 2 which caught my attention.

Do keep in mind, neither of them are made by large companies such as Griffon Enterprises or Kotobukiya. So don't expect them to make it overseas to North America.

The first one is by 嬲ってください.

The pricing is 8000 yen, and sold at WF2010 (Winter Festival 2010).
I like the face in this figure alot. It somehow reminds me of the SWR game. (Maybe the pose is similar, or something). I thought the character portrayal was good.

The second figure is by Sakura Zensen.

The pricing is a bit higher at 13000 yen (infact, alot higher) and also sold at WF2010.
I basically like everything except the face. Lol... and the price.
I think the base looks superb, so does the detail on her clothes and sword. The pose is striking and awe-inspiring.

The first one would be more on my budget if I could buy them, but if given a chance, I would buy both.

G-Anime Convention

G-Anime convention was held in Gatineau, Quebec. It was relatively close to the Quebec-Ontario border and Ottawa, which was why I was able to attend. The event was held on February 6 and 7, 2010.

First impressions:
After seeing the opening ceremony, I wasn't quite sure if this event was very well planned. Although I did not understand much of French (which was the main language there), I heard a bit of stuttering. But, people were laughing from time to time, so it might just be myself whos paranoid. The event turned out to be much like the conventions in Toronto, (ie. Anime North). Only smaller. But that was expected. There were quite a lot of people, considering it was only their 2nd time hosting this convention.

What was there:
There was your standard dealers room, game room, panels, showings, masquerade, dancing, karaoke, and something I hadn't seen before, Manga Library. To much of no surprise, the panels and showings were of otaku things (manga, cosplay, anime, doujin games).

What surprised me:
There were a few things. There was a negative one though. Starting with the negative, I got sold some fake nendoroid petite! That was disappointing. I should have known... well I didn't. It was the nendoroid petite for vocaloid, (this link here).

The positive surprise at this convention was the popularity of Touhou. (Not very, mind you) But still more than Anime North! In any case, there was a panel dedicated to talking about Touhou! Too bad it was in French, so I didn't attend. There were also merchandise of Touhou (just keychains and pins and wallpapers though).

Another nice surprise was their gaming room. They had an ATARI... HOLY SMOKES! ATARI?! They had other old consoles too, such as Super Nintendo and Game Cube. I few more, I forgot without looking back, so I won't bother posting. Of course, newer consoles were available too. (For further details, please refer to photos).

What I did there:
Well, to my dismay, I did not do much. I took pictures and videos of cosplayers, of the environment, of the events. I bought some things. Typical stuff.

I did however visit panels I was somewhat interested in. ie. Doujin games and 4chan.
Doujin Games panel was talking about how they crossed over from Japan. Atleast that was the intention. However the English lady talked mainly about how its not just men who plays visual novels. She also mentioned several titles and briefly talked about them. But nothing about actually how the games crossed over from Japan. ie. the politcal aspects, or what kind of restrictions were applied to make this game distributable. Since we all know the western audience here and the Asian audience are completely different. Most people would call us freaks if we said we have dolls of anime girls in our cabinets. But unfortunately, the part I wanted to know most, wasn't included in the presentation.

I may have been well informed in the news about Japan and their anime/otaku section, because I read up on it regularly at kotaku and sankakucomplex (NSFW). But at the panel, she also mentioned something interesting. She mentioned the ban on rape games in Japan which started with Amazon caught selling the game on their website. I already knew about the whole ordeal but I'm sure it was a nice informational session for the other people who may not know.

But all in all, I found that panel to be pretty useless. Probably more useful if I walked in without any knowledge on doujin games. Looks like a wrong choice for me.

I also walked into the 4chan one. That panel was just some spontaneous question and answer. Nothing much was planned and it was just the audience asking about memes and the host would explain where they came from. Somewhat useful, except I've never heard any of the memes before. I wasn't very educated in 4chan when I walked in. After I went to the panel, I'm still not very educated in 4chan. LOL!

Conclusion:
All in all, the convention was worth going. The people were friendly. I got alot of photos/videos taken. I got to try new games. I got to buy some Touhou stuff (That doesn't exit in Anime North). There were things to do. Its just that I didn't participate in alot of them, since I didn't know French.

For the second time being hosted, I believe this convention would be considered a success.

Here are the links for photos and videos (Videos will be removed when space is needed to upload more photos).

Writing on the go: G-Anime Convention

I'm waiting in line right now. Site says 8:00am opening but the people there says 9:00am. Atleast I know when to come tomorrow.

I'll try to do what I can do with my phone as a camera. To capture the aspects of this convention, versus Anime North held in Toronto.

Blog Mascot (By FlowingFlow)

I must thank my friend for her hard work. I am completely at loss when it comes to drawing (ie. I suck!). I'll have to figure out how to implement the picture to the blog.
Artist link: http://flowingflow.deviantart.com/

Thanks Flow!

The reason why I asked her to draw me a picture was because, certain big sites have their own mascot characters. Infact, alot of things in life has theirs.
Gundam has haro.
Card Captor Sakura has kero.
Pokemon has pikachu (and alot more).
Disney has micky mouse (and tons more).
Baseball teams has mascots.
MangaGamer has a mascot.

Although I doubt this blog will become famous enough for the mascot to be widely known along with artist, but I thought it was a good idea to atleast make one. (Or have someone make it and give them credit).

PS. Even game consoles has an anime character resembling them.
