Motivational Poster: Pride doesn't give you FOOD!

My first time making one of these. Theres probably too much black space and the border is too thick. I'll try to make it better in future work. Image source after the jump.

I made it because I saw a funny video on youtube. So I took a snapshot and editted it in photoshop.

Writing on the go: Fringe Festival

Hello again, today I am at Ottawa's Fringe Festival, waiting to watch a play called "7 Samurai".

Fringe Festival is gathering of talents in performing for a lice audience. It was between June 17-27, 2010.

They start selling tickets 1 hour prior to starting. Play starts at 8.

Here are some pictures.

Outside the entrance.

The building.

The button to enter any theatre.

The booklet of events.

The show description.

There are actually alot of other shows, but it's 10 dollars per show. So I'll only be viewing 1.

Update: I finished watching it, great acting. It was a solo performance. He did a great job acting out the personalities and characteristics of a magnitude of people. I especially enjoyed the acting of dying people. Very humorous. Its too bad he wasn't Japanese, he was just mumbling random things which sounds a little bit like Japanese, but not really.

FIXED !

Bawahahaha !

I still don't know a piece of html, other than the span codes to make the stuff hidden (maybe theres more uses for it but I don't know about them). But using some thinking, I was successful in adding the picture to the blog. As shown to the right side above the search bar.

Basically what I did was, take a look at the html from one of the posts which had an image added. Copy that code to the search gadget, then replace all the URLs of the image with the new image.

Of course, that image is still hosted at tinypic, and it may one day be brought down. Should that happen, I shall upload it on picasa and change the URL to there. So its here to stay!

Unless of course, something comes up and I feel a need to change it. Although, with my art skills, odds of making something better are slim. But dear readers are free to submit an art for the cause! Of course, your name/pen name/nickname/(whatever you choose) will be included so you may get internet fame ! LOL !

On another note, heres something I found. Shocking as it may be.

Video: Here (Possibly NSFW)

The download link is in that video's description. Though what the video shows you have more features than the one you download.

Aww...

Today, I spent a long time drawing something I wanted to implement in the blog. I wanted to include a logo in the search bar to the right side of the blog (where all the gadgets are). However, google restricts the size to 100x100 or the height no more than 50 pixels, depending on the 2 possible choices. The image is below.

I'm not an artist, I acknowledge it. You and I both can probably point out millions of flaws. But the effort is what counts! Right now, its hosted on tinypic (Here). I don't know how long it'll stay for.

But right now, if you do a search using the search bar gadget, you should see the 100x100 pixel version of that picture, clicking on it will turn it into the original size.

As for those rare people who wants to save it or manipulate it. You may do as you please.

Oh. If you like, please do send some advice on how to draw. Although I can't see myself doing much in the near future. It is one thing I would like to learn.

Earthquake !

First time being in an earthquake. It happened just about 5 mins ago at National Research Canada in Ottawa. It was probably felt else where though. But it was small. Updated.

Really small.

I felt the floor shake and I heard the sounds of glassware in the lab shake and bump into each other. We followed procedures to evacuate the building through the closest exit. Waited outside until we were told it was safe to go back in.

This was nothing compared to the earthquake simulator I was in during my trip in Japan. But over there, we were strapped to our seats.

Atleast I can call it a memory of experiencing an earthquake.

Update: I got an email from my mother living in Toronto, she had also felt an earthquake. And on the news, it was recorded as 5.5. Ohhh scary stuff.

My Fall 2010 weekly calendar at UW

Next term looks fun! So free!!! Its so rare for me to get Fridays off, considering I'm in science and labs takes up forever. Finally in the last year the only lab is the lab thats not shown on the calendar. My very own research project! The calendar is after the jump.

Too bad the research projects are rumoured to take up alot of time. But atleast I can get some early salvation by looking at this easygoing scheduel!

[Ivory] Wanko to Kurasou Visual Novel Review

This is my second visual novel review done on the blog (and in total). I don't normally like to write reviews but there just isn't any figures I'm buying... So this will have to do. This visual novel is called Wanko to Kurasou by Ivory. For the full review, read on.

Game Cover

First of all, this visual novel was not like KiraKira which was a commercially translated game. This means that a bunch of people who has an understanding of Japan, sat together using their free time and translated the game for us to enjoy. So let us be grateful for their efforts. Big clap of hands for Yandere Translations.

We'll start with a quick synopsis of the game similar to that I did for KiraKira, except this will be MUCH shorter.

You star as a male college student who had a rough upbringing. However you live a normal life operating a cram school (which happens to be in your home). You also do solo tutoring. Your name is Yusa Yuichi. You live alone and does not see a problem with that, however, a meeting with a "human dog" named Mikan soon changed you forever. The story goes on about your life after this encounter and how you adapt to such changes. The story is filled with moments of laughter and sorrow to maximize your enjoyment.

Your future dog, Mikan

Strange friend, Oumi Risa

Risa's pet dog, Silvianna (or Silvie for short)

Pet store manager, Mochizuki Nadeshiko

Nadeshiko's pet dog, Kotarou

Cram school student, Mutsuki Kana

Kana's pet cat, Kuu

Mikan's previous owner and Risa's sister, Oumi Misa

Main character, Yusa Yuichi

There are also two characters who don't seem to have their portrait at the site I gathered the other pictures from. They are Seika and Kaie. Seika is another student of the cram school and Kaie is her dog.

Cram school student, Seika

Seika's pet dog, Kaie

See? Its alot shorter !
Actually I found this visual novel to be shorter in general than KiraKira. Also I don't want to spoil anything.

If you played the game and read the synopsis, could you tell me if I did alright? Thanks!

Here are the notes I wrote down while playing the game to help me write my blog post. But I'll most likely mention it again somewhere in the rating section in a bit more organized manner. So feel free to skip it.
Notes:
- Lots of laughs (Great dialogue)
- Great art (The art looks severely underaged though)
- Alot of choices, alot more than with KiraKira (I hope the early choices doesn't affect the ending)
- The GUI isn't as great
- Game startup time is terrible (But maybe its an OS problem, I'm running Window 7 afterall)
- Interesting (There is a mention of people have smell, for example a virgin gives off a different smell from ones who are not)
- Main character is great character material, hes mature and dependable. He is good at reading atmospheres and says things that matter too! We need more animes which don't have a failure protagonist.
- Talks about the idea of love, "Love is like blaming each other for debts without a contract. Each person insists on what they believe is love and pushes that idea onto the other. It's just an exchange of selfishness."
- Story is very deep, lots of tear jerking moments
- There is sufficiently more explicit scenes than KiraKira, especially after like halfway.
- Great ending, I love it when things from the beginning of the game shows another appearance at the end. I had the "Our lives without Mikan" ending.
- In this game, alot of choices does not seem to matter except to unlock either additional cg or for a different dialogue, but final result doesn't seem to matter. I experimented with a few choices, and I ended up with the same ending. I later looked at a walkthrough and saw that theres only 2 endings to the game. Since I don't like to use walkthrough, I didn't pay much attention. I am somewhat disappointed that there are so few choices ! I thought there were more endings!! When my save game became "Our lives without Mikan" instead of the date, I thought maybe there would be an "Our lives without (insert name here)". Sadly, not happening.

Ratings:
Plot: I greatly enjoyed the story, I only got to finish the game once and got Mikan's ending so I won't speak for the other ending(s). I had originally planned to get Silvianna's because she looks so adorable!! So after I cleared the game, I checked a walkthrough, apparantely, theres only Mikan's ending and Nadeshiko's! WHAT?! I would have thought there were more... oh well. The game has many moments that makes you laugh, and some moments where you would cry because of how emotionally touching it was. There are also moments where you would agree and moments where you would not. There were things I learned from this visual novel... although I shouldn't say learned because this is still a game, so it is difficult to apply the logic and the way minds work to everyday life. But it was still an interesting thought of mind. I greatly enjoyed Yuichi's analogy of love. It was funny because I could see it as being true. But on the other hand, it made it sound like love was a terrible thing. Truly amazing play of words. Since the plot involved animals who were humanoids, it doesn't seem like a realistic story, however the events which takes place can be related to one's life. So I found it a good learning experience.
This story seemed to have an emphasis on themes of scent (or smell) and love. It may be because nearly half of the cast are dogs and they have a good nose to pick up their owner's scents and etc. It was definitely very interesting information that was being discussed. Another emphasis would be on the notion of "making love". In the first half of the game, it plays very safe, there are nothing wrong for even an elementary school student to read except one scene. But after the half way point, there was pretty much a H-scene every day that the game passed.
The game allows for alot more choices than KiraKira, however, in my experience, most of the choices did not affect the ending. The walkthrough stated that I should pick specific dialogue to say, however I tried different ones and still got the same ending. The different choices only seem to unlock extra CGs.
All in all, I think the plot deserve 5/5. But I am still disappointed at the lack of many endings.
4.5/5

Characters: The characters are all unique and I don't see any reason to hate any of them. They're all lovable and didn't annoy me (unlike animes nowadays). If there were something I didn't like it would be their voices. I love Silvie's voice, not so much Risa's and Mikan's. Kotarou's voice was somewhat strange to me also. The rest were normal to me.
4/5

Translation: I didn't find much problems while going over the game. It felt natural, there probably were some lines that could be translated better but I don't recall any.
5/5

CG/HCG: If you bought this game for its H-content, congratulation, you've made a good purchase. There are rougly __ H-scenes and __ CGs for each character or set of characters.
The CG is somewhat inconsistent, there are nice pictures and some others looks somewhat distorted or incorrectly proportioned. The characters are all drawn like little children, should that be a good or bad thing. I personally like that style. Although not always the case when characters are drawn to imply a younger age, their eyes tend to be bigger and their faces tend to be better proportioned. I can't really explain, I just like it that way.
3.5/5

User experience: I decided to include this in the review, this will be to talk about how the actual game ran and the experience I had. The reason why I added this here instead of at KiraKira was because this game receives a 1/5 in this portion. I don't know if it wasn't meant to be compatible with Window 7 or not. It was made in 2006/04/14. However the truth is, I am running Windows 7, and that is what I must review based on.
First things first. The game start up time is terrible. Absolutely terrible. I don't know if its some code problem, or maybe some incompatibility. It just hangs forever either at a black screen or at the Ivory company logo. Or anywhere in between. Sometimes it would load for 10 minutes then get to the title page then its free to work from then on. Other times, you gotta restart it like 10 times before it finally works after waiting another 10 minutes. In other words, its a hassle to get this program to run.

Freeze screen 1

Freeze screen 2

After it runs its pretty smooth sailing. I do seldom get lag where the text appears in batches instead of continuously (kind of like if you were playing a FPS, instead of walking forward, you warp forward a distance). That didn't happen with KiraKira so I assume its another incompatibility like startup.
Lastly, the GUI for this game lacks compared to KiraKira. It looks like a generic window taken straight from windows 95.

Load savegame screen

Other than technical flaws, the content of the game is superb.

Overall: Great game. Maybe I just don't have enough experience to say if the game is good or not. But certainly after playing it, I must say I found it both very interesting to have read and very enjoyable while doing it. I also think this is a shorter read than KiraKira which makes it a better choice for people who don't have alot of time. Although I mentioned the program flaws, it is not that big of a deal once the game starts running. Please do try to bear this in mind when first running the game. It might take a few more attempts. Do not lose hope and try again. Patience will be rewarded.
4.5/5

[OverDrive] KiraKira Visual Novel Review

Since figurines just don't arrive fast enough... or rather, I don't buy enough to keep the blog updated regularly, I decided to start reviewing something else. Although most of the people I know tells me if I'm doing a Japanese hobby blog, why not review anime? Well, that takes alot of effort... I don't know if I can make myself do it. However, visual novels are long, and unlike an episode, they are also less frequent. So I don't have to write too much. Also, I don't know how to upload those pictures which has a screen capture every so many seconds.

So without further ado, let us begin.

Where should I begin... how about at where you can find it? This wasn't a fan sub like some other ones you might have played. You can find it at MangaGamer. There is an all age version, and also an adult (NSFW) version. I played the adult version and I have no idea what changed in the all age version. Therefore, you could say what I played was an eroge.

The Game cover

However I prefer the story over the hentai scenes (H-scenes for short). These scenes are mainly the "making love" part in somebody's life, and any sort of teasing or preparation before that... I want to try to keep this post as family friendly as possible so I am trying to avoid using some words... But as you can see, its very difficult.

I am sure that the MangaGamer site provided a good synposis of what this visual novel was about. But I will write that in my own words, it might be a bit of a spoiler though, so please skip the following paragraph if you feel put off at playing this game after being spoiled.

*Takes a deep breath*
You are a male student at Oubi Academy, a school that provide a very laid back atmosphere for students, one such that promote self learning and self motivation. Your name is Shikanosuke Maejima. You belong to the second literature club at the school as a "ghost member" (one who never shows up). At the start of the game, you break up with your existing girl friend after (undiscussed) disputes and is hurt badly. You work at a restaurant and save up your money for a trip to travel the world because you do not have any thing you wish to spend money on. However, on one of the days of work, you meet a short girl who also wore an Oubi Academy uniform. Her name is Shiino Kirari. She mentions that the club was going to be disassembled at the end of the year because of lack of members and activities (Also, there is a first literature club). Feeling sad, you attend one of the meetings and met the other 2 girls in this story, Kashiwara Sarina and Isurugi Chie. Sarina is a rich girl who has a very refined and calm personality. She is also very quiet and does not tend to speak her mind. She also suffers from an uncurable disease. On the other hand Chie has been Maejima's childhood friend for many years. Unlike Sarina, she likes to tease Maejima for all the little things he does. She has a dark history with her family (ie. Divorce). The plot began not too long after the start of the game, when Maejima tried to stop a dispute in the restaurant and gets knocked out. He was then given 2 tickets to a STAR GENERATION live concert which he went with Shiino. That was the start of the road to being a punk and rock band. It was first suggested by Shiino at the club as a final performance at the cultural festival. However, it was miraculously successful and they decided to go on a Japan tour by car. During this journey you begin to trigger flags and eventually falls in love with one of the 3 girls (amongst other possible "bad" ends).

Main character, Shikanosuke Maejima
Energetic but poor student, Shiino Kirari

Childhood friend, Isurugi Chie

Rich "Ojou-sama", Kashiwara Sarina

But that is the story. Although possibly poorly worded, I believe that should be sufficient without too much spoiler to ruin the game. As for me, I played the route of Kashiwara Sarina because I was taken back by her sweet and calm voice. Normally, I only play the route of the character I want to get to know. Playing twice is ok too (like I did Fate Stay Night), however, many early scenes are recycled even though some choices changed. So I generally dislike playing twice.

Ratings:
Plot: I thought it was very well done. The story could possibly sound real, there are no magic or anything like that. It was something you can relate to. Even if you're not a rocker. The story was also very engaging, it talked about something I personally did not think of, it was "You have to go out and enjoy the world while you're young". I think alot of people, and me included tend to stick closely to education and refusing to take a trip for fun. In this story the 4 friends took matters into their own hands and took a journey. They borrowed a car from another friend, gather up the money they saved and went to wherever they want to go. That is not something I could possibly have done. And I can probably speak for most people that they wouldn't either. I have too many problems with that plan, "What if I got lost", "What do I go if I ran out of money?", "What if...". But in the game, the characters didn't worry about it, "If something goes wrong, we'll think about it then!". Thats the kind of attitude I think not many people have. They had fun on the trip, and although this isn't real (Its just a game), I am envious of them. To me, that gave the story a much bigger impact. The plot was also humourous. I was mainly laughing at the main character and his unhappy reponse to all the bad things that happened to him. The main one being, he had to crossdress as a girl for the duration of the tour. I wasn't really into the "trap" (#3 on urban dictionary) but the pictures of him as a girl looked very real. It was overall really good. But I had wished that the people that they met during the tour who befriended them would come back and make a final grand appearance. It didn't happen. Therefore, the ending was generally boring. It was a happy ending, and I greatly enjoyed the last little bit in Kashiwara's route. However, the last scene right up until the credits, did not go into the couple's future. There was no epilogue either (Unlike Clannad).
4/5

Characters: I probably talked way too much in the plot section so I'll keep the rest simple. The characters were all very loveable with each of them having a story which you would not know unless you were on their root (not 100% sure, I only played 1 route). But I think the general theme of this story behind each character was their families. Sarina had a very sad family member suicide incident. Chie had a family face divorce. Shiino was in a very poor family. The communication between them were also natural and did not feel bizarre.
5/5

Translation: Since I have no idea what visual novels should be ranked by, I'll write about something like their translation. It was generally not bad. The quality though felt like that from a fan sub. As in some of the sentences, I know what it means (because I have a little bit of Japanese understanding), however the subtitles says something different. The problem is not the wording, but information is missing. Also there were a few words that came up again and again. I don't know if its a subtitle problem or maybe the Japanese was written with alot of repetition. "Smiled bitterly" was used alot. I seriously mean ALOT. "Drag" was used alot too to describe Maejima in female clothes.
3/5

CG/HCG: Because this is family friendly, I can't say much at all. But after playing through Sarina's route. I encountered 2 H-scenes with said character as well as 1 H-scene with one of the side characters encountered during the Japan tour. I will assume the other routes would be similar. The CG looks fine, I didn't have anything to dislike or specifically enjoyed. The drawing seemed consistent unlike animes.
4/5
Kirari as vocal and Sarina as guitarist

Overall: I would recommend people to read this visual novel. It is quite long, I didn't time it but I kept thinking it was over, but it wasn't. I find generally visual novels takes a long time to finish. So if you don't have alot of spare time, maybe you wouldn't be interested. But I enjoyed the story and had a great laugh while reading it.
4/5
Maybe after this, I might consider reading more visual novels. If you know a good one, hit me up with a synposis and its name. Thanks!
